Serra Varsity Coach Named state Coach of the Year

Congratulations to Head Varsity Coach Patrick Walsh for being named the California State Coach of the Year. We all know what a gift it is to have Coach Walsh at the helm of our football program — a program that is as heavy on athletics as it is on heart.

This distinction is an enormous honor. Walsh earned the honor of Coach of the Year in both the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Jose Mercury News this week for his dedication to getting youth sports back on the field. Walsh, along with Justin Alumbaugh from De La Salle, co-founded the 900-member strong Golden State High School Coaches Community in late 2020 and tirelessly lobbied politicians and health officials to determine that sports were safe to play despite the pandemic. The two coaches were named in both newspapers as Coach of the Year.

This year’s football season was like no other. Shortened and compressed due to the pandemic, Serra and other teams in the state were forced to play spring football with fewer games and a shorter practice run leading up to the season. The Padres went 5-0 in their games. Walsh’s Padres have been to the CIF state finals for three of the past five years.

Congratulations to Walsh for his passion, focus, determination in leading our Padres. Walsh joins the ranks of the all-time state list of honored coaches that goes back for more than 100 years.
